How PILA Promotes Pro Bono

PILA works to inspire and engage lawyers in pro bono work by supporting a culture of legal practice that actively delivers free legal assistance to those who are unable to pay for or access legal help.

Law for Positive Change

For NGOs and community organisations tackling social problems, there is huge potential for using the law as a tool in addressing the needs of individuals and communities experiencing poverty, disadvantage and exclusion. Lack of access to legal expertise can reduce the impact of these organisations and act as a barrier to solving critical societal challenges.

Through PILA’s Pro Bono Referral Scheme we build the capacity that drives the pro bono movement in Ireland, ensuring that both lawyers and social justice organisations have the skills, knowledge and networks to address systemic problems and achieve effective social change.

PILA champions pro bono in a number of ways:

Pro Bono Pledge

Pro Bono Pledge Ireland is the first collaborative effort in Ireland to articulate the shared professional responsibility of lawyers to promote access to justice and provide pro bono legal assistance to those in need.

Pro Bono Week

Pro Bono Week is an annual event that brings together civil society, NGOs and members of the legal community such as lawyers, law students, non-profits, academics, and businesses.

Impact Projects

PILA Impact Projects match law firms with NGOs to forge ongoing partnerships to fulfil particular legal needs. They serve marginalised communities and train lawyers in social justice issues.

1. Pro Bono Pledge Ireland

Pro Bono Pledge Ireland is the first collaborative effort in Ireland to articulate the shared professional responsibility of lawyers to promote access to justice and provide pro bono legal assistance to those in need. The Pledge sets out the core values of such work to assist both those who undertake it and their clients.

The Pledge was developed by an independent grouping of law firms, barristers, and in-house legal teams with a presence in the Republic of Ireland who have come together to affirm their commitment to delivering pro bono services in Ireland. The Pledge is coordinated by PILA (the Public Law Alliance, a project of FLAC).

Launched on 26 November 2020, the Pledge provides a common definition of pro bono, a commitment to a minimum aspirational target of 20 pro bono hours per lawyer per year, and a mechanism to benchmark progress through annual reporting of anonymous pro bono data.

All barristers, law firms, individual solicitors, and in-house legal teams are welcome to join the Pledge.
