Fundraising Principles

FLAC Donor Charter

As an independent human rights organisation that seeks and receives donations from the public, the Free Legal Advice Centres Ltd (FLAC) aims to comply with the Guidelines for Charitable Organisations on Fundraising from the Public.

Our pledge is to treat all our donors with respect, honesty and openness.

We commit to being accountable and transparent so that you as a donor can have full confidence in FLAC. We promise to effectively apply your gifts to FLAC for their intended purposes.

We commit to you, our donors and prospective donors, that we will:

  • Keep you informed of FLAC’s mission and the way in which we intend to use donated resources.
  • Identify those serving as members of FLAC’s National Council, and ensure that the Council exercises prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities of the organisation.
  • Provide you with access to our most recent financial statements.
  • Use donations for the purposes for which they were given.
  • Appropriately acknowledge and recognise donations.
  • Handle donations with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
  • Ensure that all individuals representing FLAC act professionally at all times.
  • Let you know whether those seeking donations on FLAC’s behalf are volunteers or paid employees.
  • Provide easy access to agreed procedures for making and responding to feedback and comments.
  • Comply with data protection legislation, including deleting your name from our mailing list if you request it.
  • Not share your contact details or other personal information with a third party.
  • Provide you with prompt, truthful and forthright answers to questions you might have of FLAC.

Guidelines for Charitable Organisations fundraising from the Public

FLAC is committed to complying with the Charities Regulator Guidelines on Fundraising from the Public.

For more information on FLAC’s compliance with these principles, please read our Public Compliance Statement below, our Donor Charter above and our Complaints procedure.

 

Public Compliance Statement

The National Council of FLAC resolves to adopt the Charities Regulator Guidelines for Charitable Organisations on Fundraising from the Public and confirms that FLAC is committed to complying with the Statement and will endeavour to:

  • Adhere to the core principles of respect, honesty and integrity, transparency and accountability by:
  • Respecting the rights, dignity and privacy of supporters, clients and beneficiaries.
  • Answering reasonable questions about fundraising activity and fundraising costs honestly.
  • Making information about our purpose, activities and governance available to the public.
  • Demonstrate its commitment to donors by agreeing and making known a Donor’s Charter consistent with the Guidelines for Charitable Organisations on Fundraising from the Public, containing commitments regarding the causes for which the charity is fundraising, the use of donations, and disclosures regarding the status and authority of those soliciting donations.
  • Operating a complaints and feedback procedure.
  • Ensure high standards of fundraising practice by:
  • Ensuring fundraisers are committed to the highest standards of good practice by providing information and training on the Guidelines for Charitable Organisations on Fundraising from the Public.
  • Ensuring that fundraising activities are respectful, honest, open and legal and that images and messages are chosen and used in accordance with the Guidelines for Charitable Organisations on Fundraising from the Public.
  • Having a policy in place regarding the management of volunteer fundraisers.
  • Be financially accountable by:
  • Publishing an annual report and statement of annual accounts, which includes a statement on compliance with the Statement of Guiding Principles for Fundraising.
  • Making sure that there are appropriate internal financial and management controls in place.
  • Making sure that all donations are recorded and that records comply with data protection legislation.
  • Ensure that the Board and senior management take responsibility for implementing and adhering to the Guidelines for Charitable Organisations on Fundraising from the Public by:
    • Identifying any risks that may arise and ensuring appropriate mechanisms are in place given the size and complexity of the organisation to manage and deal with those risks.
